Mary Hines Obituary

Mary F. Lykes Hines was born November 6, 1955 in Verbena, Alabama to Reverend James B. Lykes Jr. and Mattie B. Lacey Lykes. Mary graduated from Verbena High School in 1973. While at Verbena High School, she was a proud member of the FHA and Theatre Guild clubs. As a youth, Mary was an active member of St. Paul A.M.E. church. She was an annual youth delegate to St. Paul A.M.E church’s yearly conferences and conventions. She graduated from Alabama State University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts- Business Management. Her college experience was some of her most memorable times, she enjoyed the mix of academic challenges, personal growth and friendships she built along the way. After college, she moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. While residing in New Orleans, she married Richard Hines Sr. ; and out of this union they had 3 children. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her time living in New Orleans, adapting to the culture and traditions. She always called New Orleans her home! One of her favorite holidays was Mardi Gras! She enjoyed dancing in the streets, catching throws, and spending time with family.

Mary worked at K&B/Rite AID as a store manager for many years, while living in New Orleans. Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina forced her to move to Atlanta, Georgia. She found a quiet suburb to live in named Stockbridge, Georgia. She lived there peacefully and comfortably. She worked close to 24 years as a manager with Dollar Tree. It wasn't just where she worked, she also found happiness and love with each employee there! She loved her Dollar Tree Family. They affectionately called her Momma Mary or Ms. Mary! She was a hard worker with everything NOT just work! Any task that arrived to her, she committed to it and executed it!

Mary always enjoyed being around family. She had an affectionate laugh and warm, welcoming smile. She had a beautiful soul, was wise, kind, spunky, selfless and very determined! She was content being at home watching tv and just relaxing. Some of her favorite shows or channels were Law and Order, Life-Time Movies, HGTV, The Bachelor, The Crown, News, Family Feud, and she loved to listen to many genres of music. She was most remembered by some calling her Aunt Mary, and for one little boy she was known as G-Ma!

She leaves to mourn her three children, Yolanda Denise Wilson (Datron) of Houston, Texas; Richard L. Hines; Gregory Hines (Shannon) of Madisonville, TN; and one Grandson James C. Wilson. Her siblings Rev. James B. Lykes, III (Pamela) of Slidell, LA; Jeremiah Lykes (Cassandra) of Wetumpka, AL and Josephine Kitt of Atlanta, GA; Sister in Law Jjennie Moore and Life Partner Richard Hines, Sr. She leaves a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and dozens of close friends that were like family to her. She was preceded in death by her parents Rev. James B. Lykes Jr., Mattie B. Lacey Lykes, four brothers, Leonard Lykes, Robert W. Moore II, Joshua L. Lykes, Jonathan O. Lykes and sister Mattie Deloris Trimble.
