On October 21, 1928, in Greenville, Alabama, Pearlie Griffin Feagin and Harrison Feagin were blessed with God’s gift of a healthy baby boy. The time to be born had come for Leroy Feagin.
In the early morning of December 9, 2023, Leroy answered God’s call to a peaceful rest and transitioned to his heavenly home. He began his formal education in the Butler County Public School System and at an early age moved to Birmingham, Alabama, and graduated from Westfield High School and Lawson State Community College. Leroy joined the Friendship Baptist Church in Brighton, where he was baptized and served as a trustee. He worked as a mail-handler until he retired from the U.S. Post Office in 1986 and moved his family to Clanton, Alabama. He joined the Morning Star Baptist Church and served on the Trustee Board, as Sunday School Superintendent and Male Chorus member. Leroy was a Korean War Veteran when he served in the U.S. Army and received several medals and accommodations. He retired as Master Sargent from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1988.
Leroy was a hard working man at everything he did. He had his farm, with vegetable gardens, cows, hogs, chickens, and a horse in Brighton, Alabama. He moved his farm to Clanton, but only brought the cattle and the horse. He devoted a lot of time to his church and various civic organizations. Besides his love of God, his life’s work was his family and community. With the support of his wife, he raised and disciplined his children in a Christian environment, teaching them to work hard and respect other people with the love of Christ. He was a mentor, leader, and friend in his community.
Leroy met and married Mary Lee Anderson in December 1949, who preceded him in death in September 2001. He met and married Geraldine Clayton Henderson in February 2004, who preceded him in death in January 2021. He was also preceded in death by his three sisters, Luemma Rutledge, Lillie Mae Simpson, and Vera Colvin, and four brothers, Eddie Paul Feagin, Nealy Feagin, John Alfred Feagin, and Governor Feagin.
He leaves a blended family to cherish his memories: children, Bobby (Mattie) Feagin of Birmingham, AL, Kenneth (Gwen) Feagin of Midfield, AL, Charles (Carolina) Feagin of Tulsa, OK, Nicole (Howard) Feagin Floyd of Decatur, AL, Eric Feagin of Brighton, AL, Derek (Gloria) Henderson of Alabaster, AL, Frieda (Willie) Bush of Wilsonville, AL, Terry Cunningham of Birmingham, AL, and Lisa Henderson, of Birmingham, AL; cherished like-a-daughter, Edna Tolliver of Clarksville, TN; one sister-in-law, Ailean Ifill of Montgomery, AL; he will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Ashley Feagin, Erica Feagin, and Erin (Rash) Kuphey; and a host of great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
