Mrs. Alma B. Varner Holyfield was born to the late Ernest Varner, Sr. and Mary Alice Posey- Ray on June 16, 1923, preceded her in death. Five sisters, one brother, and two sons, Isaac Holyfield and Clifford Holyfield, preceded her in death.
She married the late John Wesley Holyfield, and to that union nine children were born. Ms. Holyfield joined Lily Hill Baptist Church, where she remained faithful until her health failed. She enjoyed gardening, puzzle books, and her chickens and dogs. She liked to play dominoes and read her Bible on a daily basis. She loved everybody. She never missed a night on her knees praying for family and friends when she was able.
She leaves to mourn: three sons, Bobby (Jennifer) Murphy of Verbena, AL, John (Minerva) Holyfield, Jr., of Dayton, OH, and Ernest (Roberta) Holyfield of Winston Salem, NC; four daughters, Mary (Ben) Frazier of Deatsville, Claudia Gay of Verbena, AL, Roxie Swinton of Tuskegee, AL, and Cassandra O’Neal of Dayton, OH; one brother, Ernest Varner of Atlanta, GA; two grandsons, Marvin White of Verbena, AL, and Anthony Gay of Bessemer, AL; five granddaughters, Gwen, Cynthia, Cassandra, Monica, and Zenithe; thirteen great-grandchildren; fourteen great-great grandchildren; five nieces; five nephews; and a host of cousins and family members.
